What do you want to do?

Amount is the price before VAT — we'll add 16%. Amount is the price including VAT — we'll extract the 16%.

VAT Amount

Calculate VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive prices using Kenya's standard 16% rate. Useful for invoices, quotes, and price checks.

Kenya's Value Added Tax sits at a flat 16%, but working out how much of a price is VAT — or what a price will become once VAT is added — trips people up constantly, especially when quotes and invoices go back and forth between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive figures. This calculator handles both directions in one place.

Adding VAT to a Price

Select "Add VAT" and enter a price that does not yet include VAT. The calculator multiplies it by 16% to get the VAT amount, then adds that to your entered price to show the total a customer actually pays. This is the calculation a supplier runs when quoting a VAT-exclusive price and needs to show the final invoice total.

Removing VAT From a Price

Select "Remove VAT" when you already have a VAT-inclusive price — the shelf price, or the total on a receipt — and need to know how much of it is the base price versus the VAT component. The calculator divides your entered amount by 1.16 to recover the pre-VAT price, then shows the VAT portion as the difference.

Quick mental check: to strip VAT from any Kenyan price by hand, divide by 1.16. KES 1,160 ÷ 1.16 = KES 1,000 before VAT, so the VAT portion was KES 160.

Why the Same 16% Produces Different-Looking Numbers

A common point of confusion: adding 16% to KES 1,000 gives KES 1,160, but removing VAT from KES 1,160 does not simply subtract 16% of KES 1,160 (which would be KES 185.60) — it divides by 1.16, correctly recovering KES 1,000. The two operations are inverses of each other, not mirror images, which is exactly why this calculator keeps them as two distinct modes instead of one shared formula.

Who Uses This Calculator

Freelancers and small businesses use it to add VAT to a quote before invoicing. Shoppers and procurement teams use it to strip VAT out of a receipt to see the true cost of goods. Either way, the 16% rate applies to standard-rated goods and services in Kenya — some categories are zero-rated or VAT-exempt entirely under the VAT Act, so always confirm the rate that applies to your specific goods or services before relying on this for tax filing.

What is the VAT rate in Kenya?

Kenya's standard VAT rate is 16%, set by the Value Added Tax Act 2013. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt.

How do I reverse-calculate VAT in Kenya?

To find the pre-VAT price, divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.16. For example, KES 1,160 ÷ 1.16 = KES 1,000 before VAT.
