Estimate air freight costs to Nairobi (JKIA) by cargo weight and origin corridor.

How This Calculator Works

Air freight is billed on chargeable weight, not actual weight — carriers compare the parcel's actual weight against its volumetric weight (a stand-in for the space it occupies on the aircraft) and charge for whichever is higher. Enter the actual weight and, if you know them, the package dimensions; the calculator computes volumetric weight using the standard IATA divisor of 6,000 cm³/kg and applies whichever figure is larger.

Choosing a Corridor and Rate

Select the origin corridor closest to your shipment's departure point to load a starting per-kg rate. This rate is a rough market estimate, not an official published tariff — air cargo pricing changes with fuel prices, capacity, and the specific airline or forwarder, so there is no single authoritative rate to quote. Overwrite the rate field with whatever your forwarder has actually quoted for an accurate result.

Surcharges and Handling

Most air cargo quotes add a fuel/security surcharge on top of the base freight cost, plus a flat handling fee at the destination airport for customs paperwork and warehouse handling. Both fields are editable so you can match them to your forwarder's quote.

What is chargeable weight in air cargo?

Chargeable weight is whichever is higher: the parcel's actual weight, or its volumetric weight (dimensions divided by 6,000 cm³/kg, the IATA standard). Airlines bill on chargeable weight because bulky, light cargo still takes up aircraft space.

Is there an official air cargo rate in Kenya?

No. Air cargo rates are negotiated per airline or freight forwarder and change with fuel prices and capacity, so this calculator uses editable estimated rates rather than a fixed official tariff.
